In Thailand, school toilet building is designed and built apparently on the basis of a typology; the row of stalls with washing basins and urinal attached around. Because of its functionality, easy and cheap construction method, this typology has been repeated for long time until today.

The question comes up when considering the potential social impact of this project which is funded by a charitable foundation in Thailand and going to be built in 27 schools in different rural areas. Could it be more than a mere functional toilet? How could it be redefined as a place where students can find it as their own space?

What if dissolving this solid typology?

The design concept is breaking down the typological compound into its constituent elements. These elements are then carefully relocated to create in-between space. Together with the bench which is the only one additional element, these small space enables students to stay for different activities. Other than this only operation, everything else stays same as the typological toilet; structure, material, dimension, and the cost.

Wall is going to be finished with students mural. 27 different paintings will be on the wall in 2017.
