House in Mimuro /
This is a single-storied house designed for a parent and child.
The site has been owned by the client as a field for a long time, and many relatives live around the site including the adjacent land. It was requested to consider the restrained building volume and appearance to respond to the context of the strong community and kinship.
When I stood on the site, I saw the surroundings were not too crowded with houses, but the scenery was not particularly beautiful. The front road had intimate scale, but it was used as a bypath and there was a lot of traffic. Eventually my consciousness turned to the expanse of sky diagonally upward, and I wanted to create the quality of living here with the sky as a key element.
Five shed roofs that go down from the center to the perimeter of the site were built. Roofs of various orientations, sizes, and slopes are overlapped, and windows facing the sky are installed between those roofs. Each space and the time spent there are experienced with the sky, like the dining kitchen facing the south sky, the audio room facing the east sky, the bedroom facing the north sky, and so on. The sky, which has various expressions and light qualities depending on the orientation, gives each place its own personality. This enables the way of living that the parent and child go around those places and choose a comfortable place in every moment of everyday.
I tried to create a feeling of wide expanse triggered by the sky, even in a low and small building.
